So my first project was pretty experimental and a little bit scattered, exploring a very large topic in a small amount of time (and space!). For the ritual project I’ll tighten up the scope, and do something I’ve got more practice with.
Last spring I started practicing a short ritual everyday called “the Calyx” (attic Greek: κάλυξ, meaning “husk” or “pod”). For those familiar with ceremonial magic, it is similar to the Qabalistic cross or the Lesser Ritual of the Pentagram, and also shares certain elements with the Lords Prayer. The affect accumulates through daily practice over time, you gradually became more aware and receptive of certain energetic currents (more open, like a cup or “pod”), which can later be manipulated for more specific purposes. The formula is available online if you’re curious.
All metaphysical stuff aside, it has been extraordinary to integrate this rite into my daily routine, simply for the stability and balance it brings. It’s difficult to describe to people the “feel” of the currents I often experience, so I’m going to do this in a representational painting.
Here is the initial sketch and the building up of the first layer in acrylics, next I’ll move onto the oil layers.
